There is a revolution going on popular music – a throwback revolution. Planet Phunk is the next phase of that revolution. When you turn on the radio, you hear artists like Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, and Pharrell dominating the charts. These artists are drawing heavily from ’80s soul, funk AND pop to infuse today’s music with infectious energy and groove that truly sets them apart.
Enter Planet Phunk – the brainchild and passion project of William Hanford Lee Jr (lead vocals/guitar), a musician and composer with nearly 100 film/TV credits.
Planet Phunk is all about the music, the attitude and the energy of ’80s funk. The band launched in 2014 with its other leader Kevin Scott (bass), Phillip Adair (keys/vocals), and Radley Fracker (drums).
“I had been envisioning Planet Phunk for about a year or so,” Lee says as he strums a chord progression on his butterscotch tele. “Then after getting frustrated with Atlanta’s Craigslist pages, a great musician and friend invited me to this jam session at the Elliot St. Pub near the Georgia Dome. As soon as I walked in the room,” he continues, “I see this tall, bearded red head dude laying down some SERIOUS funk!”
“That was THE Kevin Scott in the flesh! We exchanged information, I sent him some of my music, and some of the arrangements I had been working on, and he invited me to come out and sing with his band The Atlanta Funk Society. These guys laid it down so thick, I was certain we could make this P-Phunk thing a reality.”
Planet Phunk is as real as it gets. The band is about GREAT music, a GREAT show and MOST importantly… the Phunk!
